I loved this book, though I agree with you that you need some time to get into the story. Once that happened though, I raced through the book!
I guess this difficult start might be part of De Bernieres writing style, as the same happened when I read his “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. It took a while to get started, but once I got into it, I couldn’t stop. By the way, at least one of the characters of “Birds without Wings” appears in “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” as well. CCM might be a good read for Greece in your world reading project (I don’t remember if you already have a book for Greece).
