Clare, I haven’t read Pynchon at all – and I admit to sort of avoiding him for just the reason you site above! I’ve heard too many people say they don’t “get it.” I finally wrote my review of Wilder’s book this morning. I’m being generous in rating the book a 3/5, I think.

I have not read this novella yet…and based on your initial thoughts, I think I can safely put this Pulitzer read on the bottom of my list! But your food sounds yummy. I hope you and your family enjoy your party. I am hosting one tonight too, and I should really be preparing for it instead of sitting on the computer. =)

Yes, I agree with Ann about Anita Desai – I’ve only read one of her novels for adults FASTING, FEASTING – but it was excellent! Sounds to me like you feel about Wilder as I feel about Pynchon’s THE CRYING OF LOT 47(not sure about the number). Maybe I need to go back to it, and I was reading it impatiently – but at the time I just didn’t get it at all.

I agree about Desai. She writes beautifully but is definitely a writer you have to work at – not a Christmas read I think. Did you ever read any of the books her mother, Anita, wrote for children? Really very good.
