Julie: I wish I had taken a Russian Lit class in college. My edition of this book didn't have a lot of explanations, so I spent a little time cruising around the Internet for information...but even still, I know I missed a lot.

"Students of Russian history and literature undoubtedly will gain more from this novel than those of us with limited knowledge in those areas."

I am sure you're right. "Russian Novels" was the best literature class I had in college, and the reason was because the prof cared a LOT about the books' sociocultural context. It almost seemed like he was using the novels to teach Russian history. I think if I was going to go back and reread Home of the Gentry now, or any other Russian novel for that matter, I would try to find an edition with lots of footnotes. :)
