24 Hour Read-A-Thon: First Mini-Challenge

And we’re off! The 24 Hour Read-A-Thon starts now: 9:00AM PCT. To start things off Darcie has posted the first mini-challenge which is a meme of sorts. There are two books up for grabs for participants who do this one and link back to Darcie. So here goes…

Where are you reading from today? I’ll be reading from my home in Shingletown, California (northern California in the mountains near Lassen Park). We are supposed to attend a wedding reception today, but not sure we are going due to the fire threats. If we do go, I’ll read in the car to and from, then take a break for a couple of hours to socialize, then back to reading!

3 facts about me …

  • I’m obsessed when it comes to books and challenges (but you knew that, right?)
  • I’m a huge animal lover – I have always had a pet in my life and strays seem to find me all the time. For a couple of years I fostered German Shepherds with German Shepherd rescue in the San Francisco Bay area.
  • I hate to lose – I’m very competitive (although that has lessened as I’ve mellowed with age!). In my younger days I played competitive basketball, field hockey, and ran track and cross country. I won the New Hampshire State 1/2 mile championship in my junior year of high school.

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

I six books and a short story. I won’t read all these, but I’ll select my reading from them.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

I’ll be really happy to finish my current read (The House at Midnight, by Lucie Whitehouse) and a short story, as well as a collection of short stories from Susan Woodring. Anything on top of that will be gravy! I hope to participate in a lot of these mini challenges.

Any advice for people doing this for the first time?

This is my first time!

Springtime on Mars would be perfect today! I just finished it last week and the stories would be great to slip in between other books. Have a great time! I signed up last minute and am so excited (even though I have an errand to run right now).

  1. Go, go, go! Good luck!

I’m a huge animal lover too. Good luck and happy reading, Wendy!

Good luck, Wendy! I can’t wait to hear how you like Alice Munro’s short stories. I just bought Runaway, by her, but I haven’t started it yet. I’ll come back later to see how you’re doing…

All of my rl friends are really competitive. What’s funny is, I’m type A in almost everything else, but I’m not at all competitive!

    Hehehe!! I’m super competitive too!

And I hope the wedding reception goes okay! The smoke is still pretty bad here….

  2. You go, girl. You know I’m with you!!!

  3. Hi Wendy, I had to stop by and say “hello” to you. One of the books I am working on for this read-a-thon is A Foreign Affair so I may get it finished sooner than I though (fingers crossed)LOL. Good luck and plan on stopping by later, WOW-I had no idea how fast this thing was going to be! We will see how I am feeling about it at 3 in the morning 😀

Thanks to ALL OF YOU for cheering me on!

Trish: I’m really looking forward to Springtime on Mars…thanks for the good wishes on the wedding reception. Still not sure we’re going. The smoke has cleared out a bit up here…thankfully!

Kristi: I’ll let you know about Alice Munro – I’ve never read anything by her.

Icedream: Yay – I can’t wait to get that book 🙂 You’re right about the time flying by…goodness, are we already 2.5 hours in?!?!
