Friday Finds - August 8, 2008

August 8, 2008
It’s Friday again, and time for another Friday Finds hosted by Should Be Reading. Here are the books that caught my attention this week:
- One More Year, by Sana Krasikov as featured on Devourer of Books. I requested this book as an Advance Readers Edition from Shelf Awareness, but it has not shown up (yet). So I felt consumed with a twinge of jealousy when Devourer of Books wrote: ‘In case I’m not making myself clear, I L.O.V.E.D. this book. LOVED it.‘ The book is a collection of short stories revolving around immigrants from Ukraine, Georgia, or Russia. If my early review copy never arrives, I’ll be buying this one.
- 84 Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff as featured on Book Nut. I recently read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (read my review) which other readers have been comparing to Hanff’s book. Melissa’s review clinched it for me. She wrote: ‘It’s a lovely little book; the letters are funny and sweet, and Helene, Frank and the rest of the “inmates” at the store are just wonderful. I loved the way Helene would talk about the books as if they were real people.‘ AND ‘It has a bittersweet ending, but I still loved it immensely.‘
- The Secret Scripture, by Sebastian Barry as featured on Ex Libris. The book sounds fascinating and Sharon wrote: ‘As troubled as the characters and situations are that Barry creates, he always treats them with dignity. And, oh that beautiful, exquisite prose.‘ Sounds like a must read.

Oh, you must read 84 Charing Cross Road.
I read it for your themed reading challenge, books about books, and it was lovely.

My new book club just recommended “84 Charing Cross Road” the other night as something we could read together, as a group. I’d heard of it before, but hadn’t really looked into it. It’s starting to sound really appealing.

I’ve been reading the Krasikov book this week- it is very good. I hope you get your copy from SA. I’m going to buy a copy for my library.

I want to read One More Year and The Secret Scripture!
I love requesting titles from Shelf Awareness but it drives me crazy not knowing if I will get them or not. I’m that way with Guernica!

84 Charing Cross Road is SO VERY lovely. I read it a year or so ago after I happened to catch the film on Turner Classic Movies. I think you will adore it.

*One More Year* is on my wish list, too. A lot of great short story collections have been coming to my attention lately, since I blogged about our book group’s trouble with discussing them.
Christopher Meeks (his new collection is *Months and Seasons*) wrote a great guest post with some suggestions.

Marie: If SA doesn’t send it, I’ll probably end up buying the book.
Shana: I know what you mean - I hate the suspense! Once in a while a publisher will email and let you know they’re sending the book, but more often than not you just have to wait and wonder!
Andi: I think I will too!
Dawn: I love short story collections but I admit to not always making the time for them. I’ve tried to change that this year. I’ll have to check out the Meeks collection.
