Index Librorum Liberorum Challenge

September 1, 2007 – August 31, 2008

UPDATE August 17, 2008: I have officially thrown in the towel on this challenge. I’ve failed miserably having only read one book out of the six I had hoped to read. Part of the reason for this has been my ever growing pile of Advance Readers Editions. At any rate, I thank Imani for hosting this challenge!

******************************

Imani over at The Books of My Numberless Dreams has come up with an intriguing challenge…to read books banned and censored by the Roman Catholic Church.

Ideally, I would read the actual books banned, but Imani is being a bit loose with the rules and allowing participants to read any book by a banned or censored author. There are no specific number of books to be read, but the challenge runs for a year…so I’ve picked six. Participants must read books from a minimum of three countries. There is a participant blog for all those readers taking up the challenge. I’m looking forward to seeing other reader’s lists and reading their reviews! Should make for some interesting discussion.

So without further preamble, here are my list of books for this challenge:

1. The Power and the Glory, by Graham Greene (Mexico)
2. The Woman of Rome, by Albert Moravia (Italy)
3. Consuelo, by George Sand (Austria, Italy and Bohemia)
4. The Toilers of the Sea, by Victor Hugo (Channel Islands)
5. Moll Flanders, by Daniel Defoe (England)
6. Candide, by Voltaire (Multiple countries) – Completed December 30, 2007; rated 4.5/5; read my review.

If you’re on bookmooch, I have a copy of the B&N version of Candide I’d be happy to send you. I dogeared a couple corners, so now they have creases, but other than that it looks like what you’d find in the store. :) My user id is astripedarmchair.
