Book Give-Away - The Year of Fog, by Michelle Richmond

Comments for give-away close on November 20, 2008
I just finished reading this fantastic novel (read my review) … I started it on a Saturday afternoon and finished it on Sunday. This is one I can highly recommend - but, don’t just take my word for it:
Wonderful…Fascinating. With a light touch, Richmond sketches even the minor characters in telling details…It’s all done delicately, in almost poetic terms. -San Francisco Chronicle Book Review-
[A} spare page-turner...The sure-handed denouement reflects the focus and restraint that Richmond brings to bear throughout. -Publishers Weekly-

She is the author of a previous novel Dream of the Blue Room, as well as the short story collection The Girl in the Fall-Away Dress. Her latest novel, No One You Know, was released this summer. I would love to read this. I’ve just read your review and what you said from a search and rescue perspective was very enlightening. “…the sense of urgency, the conviction that the lost person must be just around the next corner, the fear that giving up the search might be the biggest mistake you’ve ever made.” After reading your review I believe I would read the story with more insight. Please enter me, thank you.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:43
Oh my goodness…I’m so glad you’re doing this! It’s simple: I’d like to read this book based on your review!
November 10th, 2008 at 11:02
Your review already had me placing this on my good reads tbr list! LOL I guess what I would most love about this book is the change of heart Abby has about being a mother and how she falls in love with Jake and his daughter. Additionally, I love those books that capture the immediate moments after tragedy…like in Shreve’s Pilot’s Wife… from your review: “As the days turn into weeks and then months, many reach the conclusion that Emma has drowned - including her father - and all that is left is Abby’s certainty, her mother’s instinct, that Emma is still alive.”
November 10th, 2008 at 11:05
I’d love to read it. You’re review made it sound haunting.
November 10th, 2008 at 11:46
I’d like to read this book because of your review. I tend to have the same taste in reading as you. Thanks for the recommendation!
November 10th, 2008 at 12:02
I read your review and immediately wanted to read the book. As a parent, the book deals with every parent’s nightmare: losing a child. I still remember when my parents “lost” my little brother in Golden Gate Park for half an hour. I was only 10 but I’ve never forgotten the frantic search.
I grew up in San Francisco and love to read books set there. Walking along Ocean Beach in the fog used to be a favorite thing to do.
Thank you for the excellent review. I’ll have to read the book whether I win it or not.
November 10th, 2008 at 12:22
I keep hearing fabulous things about this book, but not in the sudden-barrage way that makes me suspicious. I feel like it’s stood the test of time, and now I’d like to win it, please.
November 10th, 2008 at 12:36
I would love to read this book because like Abby, I’m not a mother, but I love my boyfriend’s children (9 yr old twins) as if they were my own and couldn’t imagine if anything like this ever happened. Just because you don’t give birth to a child doesn’t mean you’re not a mom at heart. Thanks for entering me!
November 10th, 2008 at 12:45
I read “Girl in the Fall Away Dress” a few years back. Now I am more excited to get this book.
Hope I can win it, but if not I don’t fear putting out the bucks on a bad read….you have impecalbe taste, Wendy.

I’d love to win *Year of Fog*. I just added *No One You Know* to my stack to be reviewed in the next few weeks, and it’s always good to read more than one book by an author, to get a more complete feel for their writing.
November 10th, 2008 at 14:26
Based on your review, this sounds like a fantastic read. Just from the little snippets of the book you provided in your review, this sounds like a book I would enjoy. I agree with Jeff, I’m going to have to read the book whether I win it or not!

I want to read this book because it sounds sort of like My Soul to Keep by Melanie Wells and I really liked that book. I don’t know why I’m attracted to stories about child abduction but I am. Thanks for offering up a copy for a giveaway!
November 10th, 2008 at 15:05
I would love to be entered into this contest. I would love to read this book as I always seem to be obsessed with missing children cases. I am not sure why, other than the fact that I love kids so much an they are such a vulnerable group. I don’t have any children yet, and am already terrified of things like this. Your review was terrific and has definitely grabbed my attention.

Yes!! I’ve heard great things about this book! Add me to the list for the drawing, please.

I read “Dream of the Blue Room” several years ago and was impressed by the “largeness” of that little novel. Redmond can write, and I’d like to enjoy her again.

Please count me in; I’d love to read this. The simple answer is that your review peaked my interest, but I also find myself yearning for a more intense, emotional read. It’s been a long, long time since I stumbled across one, and this book sounds like it would fit the bill.

Hi Wendy! Thanks for hosting this contest.
I discovered The Year of Fog at Borders and immediately added it to my TBR list. I would like to read it because of its rave reviews and the plot sounds intense. Honestly, Wendy, I’m looking for just a really good read; a book that I can’t put down and find myself reading it in one sitting. I think this book fits that description.

I would love to read this book! I have seen this book around for a while and always thought it sounded good–your review has pretty much confirmed my thoughts! Not only that, but it would satisfy a “Y” book for the A to Z book challenge I am starting in January!! ;0

I can’t imagine something like this happening. It would be devastating. I’m interested in seeing how this book plays out and is concluded. Thank you for doing the giveaway.
November 11th, 2008 at 15:30
This is definitely a mother’s worst nightmare. I’ve been to Ocean Beach many times and can easily imagine the lure of the many momentary distractions. I’ve even had the experience of losing my son, albeit for only a few minutes - the longest few minutes of my life. I can’t begin to tell you the millions of thoughts that raced through my mind in just that short period. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book!
November 11th, 2008 at 16:49
Please enter me. I would like to read this book because I like the idea of the way it seems to explore the nature of memory and the excerpts in your review have me convince I will enjoy reading it.

I’d love to read this book because it sounds so moving. It sounds like it would be a really deep novel because of the subject matter. I’d also like to find out what happens to the family as a result. It’s one of the most devastating things that can happen. : (

I first saw this book at Target. I added it to my TBR list because it sounded so good. The topic of missing children is a tough one for me, but even with a fictional account, as a Mom I always feel as if I can learn something about how to better protect my child, etc.

This sounds like a wonderful book - as a mom raising 3 kids with a wonderful man, who is a stepdad to two of those kids, I love that even though she was not the biological mother - her mother’s instinct new that Emma was still out there. I think it can be the same with a father, whether biological or not, the love is absolutely the same. Please enter me in the drawing for this book.
Thanks

This book sounds so good! I was already interested but when you gave it such a good recommendation that really made me want to read this. I’m always a sucker for these emotional family stories even when they break my heart. It’s so interesting to find out how families try to merge and the obstacles they must overcome. I also admired the cover here. Thank you for your great contest.

I am a photographer and a newlywed. I chanced upon your blog through searching for meanings through photographs. Now I am hooked reading your blog. I would love to get the chance to win a copy of the book. I am very much interested to know how the main character in the book used photography in her journey. Maybe, I will find the meaning in what I am looking for as well. Thank you so much!
