This time of year my mailbox is full of holiday greetings and occasional packages. I’ve also found a few books in there!
The Glister, by John Burnside which arrived from Doubleday. This is an Advance Reader’s Edition and is due for publication March 2009. Author Jim Crace writes about this book: ‘John Burnside’s The Glister masquerades as an enthralling murder mystery, but his greater, subtle purpose is to investigate the mysteries of evil, death, and eternity, and so provide a work of astounding moral clarity and transcendence.‘
Blonde Roots, by Bernardine Evaristo which arrived from Riverhead Books via a Shelf Awareness request. This looks like an unusual novel in that it “upends history of the transatlantic slave trade and asks: What if Africans had enslaved Europeans?” Sounds a bit provocative, doesn’t it?
A Good Distance, by Sarah Willis arrived from Kim at Page After Page. This was a book I won in October when I participated in Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon. Willis is compared to both Anne Tyler and Kaye Gibbons – both authors I enjoy…so I am especially looking forward to reading this one. Thanks, Kim!!
