There are plenty of books to choose from in my towering stacks. This photo was taken in the summer of 2008 – it is a bit neater now. But there are just as many, if not more, books there. I decided to pare back on time-limited challenges this year and focus more on my perpetual challenges which include reading from the prize lists and reading around the world.
Here is a list of time-limited challenges I have decided to do in 2009:
Dewey’s Books Reading Challenge (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to read 5 books (see my list)
My Year of Reading Dangerously Challenge (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to read 12 books (see my list)
New Authors Challenge 2009 (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is 50 new authors (see the details of the challenge)
The 2009 PUB Challenge (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to read 9 books (see my list)
Lost in Translation (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to read 6 books (see my list)
2009 ARC Reading Challenge (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to read 12 books (see my list)
2009 Mini Challenges (Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2009) – goal is to complete 12 literary mini-challenges (see the list)
2009 Themed Reading Challenge (Feb 1 – July 31, 2009) – goal is to read 6 books (see my list)
That is a total of 8 challenges. I know I will also be doing Michelle’s 1% Well Read Challenge and the Chunkster Challenge as well. So that is a total of 10. Considering I joined more than 30 in 2008 and completed 24, this is actually quite scaled down!
There are a few challenges I joined in 2008 which finish in 2009. They are:
BookAwards II Challenge (ends June 1st). Goal is 10 books. I’ve read 5 (see my progress)
Suspense-Thriller Challenge (ends Dec 31st). Goal is 12 books. I’ve read 6 (see my progress)
Soups On Cookbook Challenge (ends March 30th). Goal is 6 books. I’ve read 2 (see my progress)
What An Animal Challenge (ends June 30th). Goal is 6 books. I’ve read 1 (see my progress)
Unread Authors II Challenge (ends January 31st). Goal is 6 authors. I’ve read 5 (see my progress)
My goal for 2009 is to join only challenges which do the following:
- Promote reading ARCs or Early Review Books
- Encourage me to read books from around the world (including books in translation)
- Encourage me to read from the prize lists or notable lists (my perpetual challenges)
I will only choose books I already own for any time-limited challenges. If they are not on my shelf, then I won’t join the challenge.
Those are my resolutions…now let’s see if I can stick to them!!

Wow! You have so many challenges! Your pile is not so bad! =)
Oh my! That is a lot of books and a lot of challenges. I don’t feel so alone now!
I wish you much success in your goals for 2009…

Vasilly: It is all perspective *laughs*
Kim: Yes it is…but not nearly as bad as 2008! Glad all of us challenge-a-holics stick together…makes us feel like this might be normal *laughs*
That picture is awesome! I love big piles of books lying about. Great luck with your challenges! I’ve gone overboard this year and joined sooo many
LOL, Joanne – it is a little scary sometimes!
