Mailbox Monday – March 2, 2009

mailboxmonday What arrived at your house last week? Visit Marcia at The Printed Page for this week’s Mailbox Monday. Here is what I found in my mailbox:

localnews The Local News, by Miriam Gershow came to me as an ARC through a Shelf Awareness offer from Spiegel and Grau. The story revolves around the fictional character Lydia Pasternak and the disappearance of her brother Danny. Spiegel and Grau’s  press release reads: “The Local News is a heartrending depiction of what happens inside the homes of those bereaved families. This accomplished and affecting debut from Miriam Gershow is an authentic and, at times, surprisingly funny dissection of public and private grief.” I am always interested in books which explore the emotions and reactions around missing individuals…and I love reading debut novels. This book was released February 24th and is available in hardcover.

girlsheusedtobe The Girl She Used to Be, by David Cristofano is a beautiful hardcover sent to me from Miriam at Hachette. This debut novel deals with issues around personal identity, the Witness Protection Program and the Mafia. When Melody Grace McCartney was only six years old, her life and name were changed when her parents witnessed a brutal act of violence. This is Melody’s story living within the confines of the Witness Protection Program, and her search for herself as she grows into a young woman. Early reviews have called this novel “eloquent,” “haunting,” “poignant,” and “riveting.” You can read more on the website designed for this novel. This book will be released in March and is available in hardcover. I am very much looking forward to reading it!

*The Local News* is sitting on my shelf, waiting … Have you read Kirk Curnutt’s *Breathing Out the Ghost*? It’s a realistic, yet sensitive, portrayal of how people respond to a missing (or killed) child.
