Books which arrived free for review from a variety of sources:
Broken Angel by Sigmund Brouwer arrived via a contest through WaterBrook Multnomah’s Library Newsletter. This book deviates from the books I normally read in that it is futuristic with a “post-apocalyptic edge.” The back of the book reads: ‘In the rough, shadowy hills of Appalachia, a nation carved from the United States following years of government infighting, Caitlyn and her companions are the prey in a terrifying hunt. They must outwit the relentless bounty hunters, skirt an oppressive, ever-watchful society, and find passage over the walls of Appalachia to reveal the dark secrets behind Caitlyn’s existence – and understand her father’s betrayal.‘ I’m curious about this one. Broken Angel was published in May 2008 and is available in both hard and soft covers.
The Cradle by Patrick Somerville came to me in hardcover form from Miriam of Little, Brown & Company. This is a debut novel. The inside flap reads: ‘Elegant and astonishing, The Cradle tells the story of one man’s journey into the heart of marriage, parenthood, and what it means to be a family.’ It is a short book (only 200 pages long) and is being released today – find it on Amazon. I’m looking forward to reading it.
The Marriage of True Minds by Stephen Evans came to me from Caitlin of Unbridled Books. This book was released in paperback in May 2008 and is the story of Nick Ward and Lena Grant – a failed husband and wife team of lawyers who cannot quite break free from one another – and an aging Irish Wolfhound named Wolfram. The back of the book reads: ‘With bright wit and machine-gun dialogue, The Marriage of True Minds sweetly explores modern love, undying idealism, some dedicated animal rescue, and one cracked partnership that can’t be sundered – from without or from within.‘ A portion of the sales profits from this book are donated to Best Friends Animal Society. I am interested to read this quirky book.
Malice by Lisa Jackson arrived in hardcover from Joan and Joy of Kensington Books. Lisa Jackson is the best selling author of numerous novels in the suspense-thriller genre. Malice brings back New Orleans Detective Rick Bentz (who also appeared in Lost Souls and Cold Blooded) as he attempts to reconcile the facts surrounding his late ex-wife’s apparent suicide…and uncovers a serial killer in the process. I read a ton of literary novels, but every now and then I crave one of these nail-biters. I’m putting this one near the top of my list. Watch for Malice in stores in April.
And one I ordered from Amazon:
Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald won the Booker Prize in 1979. The book explores the lives of quirky characters who reside on the barges along the Thames in 1961.
