Tomorrow marks the start of the first Mystery Read-A-Thon. Here is a meme to get us started:
What books do you want to read during this read-a-thon?
I am planning on dipping in and out of a real life murder mystery (non fiction): The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, by Kate Summerscale. I also have several fiction books and am leaning towards Malice by Lisa Jackson, AND What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman.
How many books do you hope to finish?
If I complete one book, I’ll be very satisfied.
What (if any) breaks do you intend to take?
The goal is 12 hours. I plan on starting around 6:00 AM (PST) and hope to stay up until about 10:00 PM…so that gives me four hours of down time for eating, blogging or just resting my eyes.
Do you generally read lots of mysteries and thrillers or are the one of the many genres you like?
They are one of many genres I enjoy. I actually have quite a few of these types of books on my TBR stacks. I started reading more literary fiction about a year ago, and fell off of mysteries for awhile. But lately I’ve been craving mysteries and thrillers and have been really having fun with them.
What are some of your favorite authors?
I love the forensic thrillers – so of course Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs are two of my favorites. I have also enjoyed Lee Childs’ Reacher series. Recently I read both of Benjamin Black’s literary thrillers and loved them. But, I’m not terribly picky – any well-written thriller or mystery can captivate me.
If you could make us all read one mystery or thriller for this read-a-thon, which one would it be and why?
Oh wow, that is a good question and I don’t know as if I have a great answer. I’m going to pass on this question!
Do you prefer series or stand alones?
Either are fun – and sometimes I am in the mood for a series, while other times I’d rather not start a series that I then feel compelled to read all the books.

I loved your anwers, Wendy. And as I mentioned in my answers, I knew I had missed quite a few favorite authors, and you mentioned a few of them: Kathy Reichs and Lee Child. I read three of Benjamin Blacks mysteries, and although I enjoyed them, I can’t say he is one of my favorites. Even if his mysteries take place in the capital of the country where I live.
Have fun reading!!! I’m on a mystery kick myself!!
I am currently reading a murder mystery. I think I will join in. I got lots of Agatha Christies, which I want to re-read. Maybe this would give me a kick start.
I like your answers. I will do this too! Thanks!
I did the meme!
Here are my Mystery Read-a-thon meme answers!
Enjoy the read-a-thon, I hope you read some books you like. Mystery books are pretty new to me but I am enjoying what I have read today so far.
I love the show Bones, but have yet to read a Kathy Reichs book. Glad to hear that you like them. I have to get my hands on one. Good luck today!
Wendy, if you love the forensic science stuff, Thomas Holland is another great contributor to that subgenre. He only has two books out at this point, but they are both outstanding.
Hope the reading is going well for you. I’m enjoying my reading outside so I can also enjoy the beautiful day.
Marleen: Thanks
I really enjoy Black’s novels – although they were different from most mysteries I’ve read.
Staci: Thanks! Glad to know someone else is focusing on mysteries right now!
Gautami: Glad I inspired you to join us!
Rhinoa: Mysteries are great “escape” reading for me…glad to see you are trying out the genre.
Nicole: I never could get into the tv show Bones because I had a picture in my head of what the characters should look like, and the show doesn’t match *laughs* Reichs writes some nail-biters!
Jen: Oh, thanks for that recommendation – I had not heard of him before…will check out his books. Glad you have a nice day to read outside!
Thanks a lot for participating!
I’m impressed that you actually started the read-a-thon at 6am. I’m no morning person, so in my book you’re very, very brave!
Thanks for hosting, Kathrin…I’m going to do the one in August too
