Mystery Read-A-Thon: Thus is Begins

It is 7:30AM and I am just about ready to start my 12 hours of reading for this event. I had hoped to start an hour and a half earlier, but puppies (as with children) don’t always cooperate. Raven was up much of the night due to sore teeth – she is teething and is quite dramatic about the whole thing. She is also going through a growth spurt again. I have given her a frozen face cloth which seems to feel good on her little mouth…so hopefully, she will not be so bratty and Iwill get to read today!

I did a meme yesterday as an introduction.

Today there is another short set of questions:

Tell us more about your mystery/thriller reading habit?

I’ve been reading mysteries and thrillers ever since I was a pre-teen. In fact, this was one of the first genres I really fell in love with. My reading expanded in the last few years, and now I dip in and out of a variety of genres, but I always come back to mysteries and thrillers.

When did you start reading this genre?

See above!

What was your first experience with the genre? The ever popular Nancy Drew or Agatha Christe? Or someone completely different?

Nancy Drew was one of my favorite childhood series. I read all the books and I think they are still boxed up in my parents’ attic. As I got older, I read quite a bit of the true crime stuff that Ann Rule writes (still love her books), although they often gave me nightmares!

How did you discover it?

My mother got me a library card before I even started school. I went the to the library every single week for years and it was only a matter of time before I stumbled across mysteries.

Do you exclusively read mysteries and thrillers or do you mix it with other genres? If you switch genres, which other genres do you read?

I read all kinds of books – my favorite genres include literary fiction, historical fiction, women’s fiction (chick lit), and non fiction adventure books. I’m on a big mystery/thriller/suspense kick right now because I’ve been away from it for a while. Also I have really been loving some of the women’s fiction I’ve been reading.

  1. You are so lucky to still have all your old Nancy Drews. Unfortunately I can’t remember much about them except being in love with Ned Nickerson, but one of these days I’m going to go to the library and see if I can go through the whole series (or see if I even want to anymore after trying one!)

    Good luck in your marathon!

I did not read all the Nancy Drew books, but I read a good number of them. I distinctly remember saving up my allowance money and every three weeks I would have enough to buy another book ($1.24 each). I think my books are boxed up somewhere in my attic. I keep thinking I am going to take them down and display them on my bookshelves, but that has yet to happen.

I hope you get lots of good reading accomplished today during the readathon.

Rhapsody: It *was* a great series, wasn’t it? I have been tempted to re-read it one of these days.

Molly: LOL – isn’t it funny how “cheap” books were in those days? I cannot imagine what those original books would go for in today’s market! Thanks for the encouragement!!

Okay, is it embarrassing when I admit I haven’t read a single Nancy Drew? *blush*
They have never been popular here in Germany…

Kathrin: don’t be embarrassed! It is not too late to read a Nancy Drew mystery – you should try one.

  6. Kathrin says:

Wendy, I’ll definitely read one soon! :-)
