The incidence of cougar attacks on people is very low...but the hype is huge. Jeane: I *did* really see TWO cougars...we have a healthy population of the animals in our county, but even still, a sighting is rare so I was lucky. That is not my photo :) ... I wish! They are so beautiful! (is that your photo?) Once when I was about thirteen and we were camping, my father saw one on a hiking trail- but he didn't tell us until later because he didn't want anyone frightened. I lived in the foothills of the Rockies in this country when I was young. Sitings are rare here too and the scare stories that get spread around are just so much baloney. People today don't understand animal behaviour and cling to old ideas that all wild animals are aggressive and want to attack humans. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sandy: Your husband was one of the lucky ones to actually see a mountain lion (and in Vermont no less!!). It is such a thrilling experience! And this is a man who has hunted all over North America and in South Africa so he's seen a few wild animals in his day. To see such an elusive and beautiful creature in your own territory must be an amazing feeling.
