Sunday Salon – August 2, 2009

Sunday Salon

August 2, 2009

Is it really August already? This summer is just flying by. I woke up this morning to the sky grumbling and the smell of damp earth – highly unusual in Northern California this time of year to actually get rain, but I’m grateful for it … especially since it seems that we are going to have a bit of thunder and lightening. Last year, dry lightening sparked hundreds of fires in our area, so when I hear the rumbles off in the distance I always feel a little anxious.

Since my last Sunday Salon post, I finished reading The Good Thief which did not really resonate with me (read my review). I wanted to like it since it won a ton of awards and other readers who I respect loved it. But, it was not to be. Perhaps just a mood thing.

My current read is The House on Fortune Street which is very British! The story is told from the points of view of four different characters…and so far I’m interested in their stories. I hope to finish this one up soon so I can start reading Someone Knows My Name – a chunkster of a book which I am eager to get started.

Here is a look ahead to the rest of the month:

  • The Book of Unholy Mischief by Ellie Newmark – reading for Pump Up Your Book tour…watch for a review on August 18th.
  • Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck – reading for a book club discussion
  • The Mystery Read-A-Thon is slated for the weekend of August 8th – so I’ll be reading a couple of mysteries. I’m also going to be giving away a couple of books for that event.
  • I need to complete the Southern Reading Challenge by the 15th of the month. Not sure that is going to happen, but we’ll see.
  • I’ll also be picking my first Random Read for the Random Reading Challenge (it’s not too late to sign up if you want to be random!).

By the way, in non-book-related news…I’ve begun creating a new page and sub-pages called All Things Creative on my blog. Please check it out. It is in a state of change and building, but will ultimately be a place where visitors to my blog can see what I am doing creatively. My latest obsession is Quilting and I have created a subpage to showcase all my quilting projects. Let me know what you think. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to create a whole new blog for this stuff (and might still do that), but first wanted to try it this way.

I hope you have a wonderful week ahead…and whatever you are doing today, I hope it involves a good book!

Please follow and like the blue thistle

Maybe all of our rain (Michigan) finally found its way to your neck of the woods!! I’m going to my list of books for your challenge to see what I’m reading this month…very exciting!!

I had no idea there was a 2nd mystery read-a-thon scheduled — thanks for the head’s up. I am on my way over to register now. I have so many mysteries on my TBR pile; the timing for this event is absolutely perfect.

  1. I had a look at your quilts and thought they were gorgeous.

  2. I’m bitterly envious about your quilts. Some years ago my ophthalmologist told me I had to choose between close sewing and reading. Well, it was a no brainer really, wasn’t it? But I still miss the quilts. Yours are beautiful.

  3. Wow. Your quilts are so pretty!

I will be curious to read your thoughts on Someone Knows My Name. I have it on Mount TBR!

You continue to amaze me, by the way. Your quilts are lovely. Give Raven a kiss from me! =)

Staci: Can’t wait to see what your first random read will be! I don’t think we are matching your rainfall (unfortunately!). It was really just a light rain which has now given away to hot, dry weather again…oh well!

Molly: I’ll look forward to reading mysteries with you in a week!

    Vivienne: Thank you!

Anne: I’m so sorry you were forced to choose between two things you loved (just FYI – I would have chosen books too!).

    Michelle: Thanks!

Jill: It is a real door-stopper, but I’ve heard good things…so I’m looking forward to it. Thanks for the compliments on the quilts 🙂 Raven sends back a lick and a headbite!

  4. I’m still in denial. I am not sure I want it to be August just yet. I am sorry The Good Thief wasn’t better for you. I’m trying to remember if that one’s made it onto my wish list yet or not. I don’t think so. I’m looking forward to reventually reading The Book of Unholy Mischief. That one sounds like so much fun.

I hadn’t heard about the Mystery Read-A-Thon. Those types of events always seem to come around at bad times for me. Someday I might actually get to participate. 🙂

I hope you have a great week, Wendy!

I can’t believe that it is August already either. I live in the midwest and it’s been a cool summer here. I like the idea of featuring your quilts and projects on a subpage. I just hope that we can see that there is a new update on your homepage and in google reader.

  5. I think there should be a ban on serious reading during the summer. Nothing highly acclaimed has resonated with me this summer, either. I think it is just too serious for the summer.

WendyCat: I know what you mean! I am also looking forward to the Book of Unholy Mischief…and the Mystery-Read-A-Thon. It doesn’t seem right that you can’t participate in the read a thon…you read SO many mysteries! Hope you’re having a good week.

Bonnie: Thanks for the feedback on my new creative page and subpages. I will post to my blog and let people know when I’ve added new content so you will get the updates that way 🙂

Debbie: *laughs* I agree – no serious reading during the summer!
