Welcome to another Mailbox Monday on Caribousmom! This fun weekly event is hosted every Monday by Marica at The Printed Page and is a time for reader’s to share the books which arrived at their homes in the past week.
This was a terrific week for me in books….
Here is what arrived at my house:
Last Night In Twisted River by John Irving arrived direct from Random House and I was thrilled when I opened the package. I LOVE John Irving’s work – I have read nearly everything he has ever written and I am very excited about this book. Irving’s latest novel is due for release in October. Set in 1954 in a logging and sawmill settlement in Northern New Hampshire, the book revolves around two fugitives: a twelve year old boy and his father. Irving picked the following paragraph as representative of the theme in the novel: “We don’t always have a choice how we get to know one another. Sometimes, people fall into our lives cleanly – as if out of the sky, or as if there were a direct flight from Heaven to Earth – the same sudden way we lose people, who once seemed they would always be part of our lives.” To read more about Irving and his work, visit the author’s website. Readers may read a special introduction to Irving’s latest novel here.
Chosen to Die by Lisa Jackson arrived from Joan Schulhafer Publishing and Media Consulting. Jackson’s newest novel (published through Zebra) was released in paperback on August 1st. As with her other books, Jackson’s novel Chosen to Die centers around a killer – this time hunting for victims in Montana. When the lead detective, Regan Pescoli, disappears her only hope is to be found before her time runs out. Jackson is the author of many, many thrillers. To learn more about her work, visit the author’s website. Read an excerpt from Chosen to Die here.
Sometimes We’re Always Read Same-Same by Mattox Roesch arrived from Caitlin at Unbridled Books. I always love getting books from this publisher – usually the authors are new to me, and typically the genre is literary fiction…which I love. Roesch’s debut novel is set in Alaska and is narrated by a seventeen year old gangbanger who moves to Alaska from Los Angeles with his Eskimo mother. The book is hailed as “more than a teen-coming-of-age story” and described as “stunningly original.” Roesch has won awards for his short fiction which have appeared in such publications as The Missouri Review. To read more about him and his work, visit the author’s website. Read more about the novel, including an excerpt, at the Unbridled Books Website.

Lucky you getting the John Irving book. I can’t wait for it. I guess hubby and I need to plan a road trip because we like to listen to the audio books together – and they usually need a loooong trip.
Looks like you got some great books. happy reading.

OMG, I am so thrilled you posted about “Sometimes We’re Always Read Same-Same”. I may not have heard about it otherwise and I am so excited to get my hands on a copy ASAP. Thank you!
Melanie: Irving’s latest would be good for a long trip – it is a chunkster! I’m not so great at listening to audios…I think I get too distracted and miss important plot points!
Serena: Thanks!
JoAnn: I read the first two paragraphs and was instantly into the book *laughs* I think this one will be a good one (he’s “missed” on a couple for me lately…)
Gautami: Thanks!
Pam: *laughs* Okay – I’ll try to get to it soon
Icedream: You’re welcome…it looks like a really good book!
I will admit it, I’m more than a little envious of Last Night in Twisted River.
I haven’t heard of these, so I’m looking forward to your thoughts.
I’m really late getting around to checking out everyone’s mailboxes this week! You got some really interesting selections this week, I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of them! I’m really envious of the Lisa Jackson book! My mailbox is here.
Kathy: I have to admit, I jumped up and down and cheered when that book arrived.
Anna: Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long
Kelly: Well, at least you get around…I am so behind in my blog reading these days I think I will never catch up.
John Irving is coming to the Vanvouver Internation Readers and Writers Festival. I plan to see him.
I’ve only read one by Irving (A Prayer For Owen Meany), but I loved it. So much so, I read it a second time. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of this new one. I like the quote!
