Moderation

Due to a rather rabid spammer who has somehow figured out how to get around my very good spam filter, I have turned on moderation for those commenters who are new to Caribousmom. Once I have approved a first time commenter, they will be free to post comments unmoderated.

I have been deleting spam comments over the last two days, and hoped that my spam filter would “learn” how to identify them…but this morning I had to delete about 20 comments. I’d rather moderate comments than allow any spam to get posted to my blog (even if it is only for a day). The other option I had was to close old posts to comments – which I decided against because every now and then I get a really wonderful comment on an old post.

Thanks for your patience!

It definitely seems like spammers are getting trickier lately. I have had to delete quite a bit of spam that has been through lately.

  2. I wonder if you and I are getting hit by the same spammer. I had to delete a dozen two days in a row. That’s never happened before. It’s awful when I see from my email that I have 12 new comments to only have 1 of them be legit. Ugh.

  3. I’m sorry to hear this is happening, Wendy. What a huge drag.

  4. Me too – the last 3 days or so have been very active for spam. Maybe it’s the 72-hr spam-a-thon!

I don’t even understand why they spam in the first place…very frustrating for you!!

Uggg What a drag! I have one post in particular that always seems to get a lot of spam. I gave up and let them spam it since the post is two years old and no one else will see the comments. (I’m lazy like that.) LOL

Nicole: I believe the ones I’ve been deleting the last couple of days are from the same source as they use a similar comment in each post…but what is throwing my spam filter, I think, is there is a different IP address for each comment – and a different email. What stinks is that I can’t just isolate an IP address to block.

Natasha: Sorry to hear you are also going through this (see my comment to Nicole above). I hope our spam filters will be able to figure this one out soon. I hate to moderate comments.

Avisannschild: Thanks…it is a total drag!

Rhapsody: LOL – at least you’re keeping your sense of humor. Looks like several people are experiencing the same spate of spam comments.

Staci: I always wonder the same thing about spammers…I mean, come on, do they really think anyone is going to actually click on their links? I wonder what they get out of it.

Typ0: *laughs* It is the principle for me – I hate giving them even an inch on my blog!!

I hate spammers! So far, my spam filter works wonders (sometimes it’s a little too anal and real comments get caught!). I hope you get this figured out soon – spam sucks! Down with spammers!!

Lahni: LOL – you’re singing my song!!

I got spam on my blog the other day, too, and I NEVER get spam. I was shocked!

I got hit with a lot of spam recently, too. It’s really very annoying- I was considering turning on comment moderation myself but for now am just deleting them as they show up.

  12. Typ0’s comment reminded me that I had a post that kept getting spammed every day (just one or two comments a day, but always the same post). In the end, since it was an old Mailbox Monday post, I just turned the comments off. Luckily (knock on wood), the spammers didn’t move on to another post!

Kailana: I think they keep finding new and better ways to “beat the system.” It is a little discouraging.

Jeane: I hope they stop attacking you…ever since I turned on moderation, I’ve only had one or two come through. Figures!

Avisannschild: They do usually go after the older posts…I haven’t noticed any particular one on my blog.
