My stacks have been selected (click for a larger view) – from these I will chose my books to read for this event. The clock has ticked to 5:00AM PST and I imagine readers all over the world, with their feet up, reading, curled around a good book. They are motivated, excited and ready to read, blog, and visit other readers for 24 hours. What an awesome event this is!

And this is probably a good time to remember the person who started it all. Dewey died almost a year ago…but her vision of a community of book bloggers has continued on even in her absence. How she managed to run all the events she ran, I will never know…but I do know she would be proud to see them carrying on in her name. I miss you, Dewey – this year I will be not only reading for myself, but in your memory as well.

Here is my game plan:

  • I am going to do updates every other hour rather than every hour this year which will allow me greater reading time.
  • I am shooting for 20 hours of participation – there is no way I can stay awake 24 hours and given my health lately, I think that would just be stupid to try.
  • I plan to do many of the mini challenges and I will try to be visiting some blogs as well.
  • I have about 50 pages left to read in Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich…so that will be my first book. Next up after that will be The Girl She Used To Be by David Cristofano. I’ve had this book on my shelf far too long – a review copy sent to me by Miriam at Little Brown & Co…and today I will finish it!

Hour One Mini Challenge:

Where are you reading from today? The mountains of Northern California…inside my cozy little house.

3 facts about me …

  1. I’m married to the best guy in the world
  2. I usually read close to 3 books during the Read-A-Thon
  3. I love lobster…but I can’t eat it anymore. I developed a fatal allergy to seafood at age 40!

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? I have 14 options…but look at fact #2 above – I will probably only get to three of them.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I don’t really have a goal for number of page/number of books. But I always shoot for 20 hours.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time?

  • Have fun.
  • Take lots of breaks.
  • Read short, light books.
  • Participate in the mini challenges and visit other readers – that is half the fun!

And now off to read!

I’m the first comment?! Well, happy reading! Sounds like great plans. I’m all for breaks.

    Enjoy you reads!

Updating ever other hour sounds like a good plan! I would do that but my brain gets so anxious to update every hour that it would drive me crazy while I’m trying to read! Good luck with 20 hours! I’m really not sure how many hours I’ll be able to read!

  3. Memory says:

Good luck with your goals! I also plan to cut back on the updates this time too. More time for reading & visiting other peoples’ blogs!

Rebecca R: yup, you were the first :) Thanks for the cheering!

    Kristen: *smiles* *waves*

    Lu: thanks for the cheering!
