I’m sort of totally consumed by Christmas at the moment, and what I’m getting various people. I was looking for books about the Cubs for my oldest brother (obviously a fan — and owner of something like 115 books ALREADY, so obviously new and worthy ones are hard to come by!). But in looking for that I came across a great book on understanding the basics of football, written by a sportscaster, Mark Oristano. “A Sportscaster’s Guide to Watching Football” is a great book if you know anyone who wants to enjoy and understand the game with a football-loving friend or family member. The author spent his broadcast career in the NFL, so he knows what he’s talking about. And let’s face it, the college bowl games are coming (hey — my Northwestern team is going to Jan. 1 bowl game — I’m pretty excited) and so is the Super Bowl. For those who don’t know much now, they’ll sound pretty knowledgeable then.

Deb: That one is on my wish list…I’ll be interested to read your thoughts on it.

Laura: Although Kristin Lavransdatter is a HUGE chunkster, it is a relatively quick read…I love HF and although this one has a fair share of romance (which I am not always fond of), I am really liking it. I hear you re: the 2010 challenges. I’m trying to be selective…but it is always so hard to keep the lists down at this time of year. My new attitude towards challenges, however, is if I don’t finish them..oh well!

I’ve been intrigued by Kristin Lavransdatter although it’s quite a commitment. Good to see that you are enjoying it so much; that’s always a good sign!

I’m trying to keep my 2010 challenges to a minimum. There are a few “tried and true” ones that I love (like Book Awards), and I’ll still set goals for my perpetual challenges, but I’m planning to leave a lot of room to read “just for fun,” and from my stacks. I really enjoyed that this year!

Lilly: I haven’t read The Birth of Venus (yet)… I have it in my stacks. I got this book as an early review and a book group I’m in are discussing it in January…so I figured it was time to read it! I’ll be interested in reading your thoughts on it.

Kathy: The key with challenges (in my opinion) is to first of all only pick ones which you already have books to fit them; and then create a bit of a plan, but one which has flexibility…and lastly, don’t stress if you don’t complete them! I always look at the ones I don’t complete as a lesson for me in what I really want to read…and sometimes they do get me to explore a genre I might not normally read. Good luck in 2010 with yours!

It’s cold here, but not that cold. I tried a few challenges and failed miserably, so I swore off of them. I got talked into doing a few more and have actually completed a couple of them, so I’m feeling flush right now. I plan to sign up for a handful later this week.

I am planning on reading Sacred Hearts this week as well. I have had this book on my shelf for a few months now and been putting reading it away but I just want to be done with it not. The reason why I am so wary is because I actually wasn’t crazy about The Birth of Venus. I was rather disappointed with it but want to give Dunant a second try. Anyway, I will be waiting to see what you think about this book.
