Michelle: I like your thoughts about the cultural aspects - I think it is so hard for Americans to relate to how many immigrants feel...we have nothing to compare it to and our culture is so different. But I enjoy learning more about different cultures and countries and this book gave me a lot of insight.

WendyCat: I bet it was different reading this as one story...I also enjoyed the political and social parts of the books.

I read the two books in one volume and so my reading experience was slightly different. I don't think I could separate the two out. I found the overall story fascinating, especially the political and social aspects. Thanks for your great reviews, Wendy.

Like you, I found Book 2 more engaging. Maybe also because it was told from a more mature perspective, it was easier to relate to her feelings and struggles.

I think the 'clinging to her culture despite the restrictions' is typical of most Asian/Eastern cultures. To 'go-it-alone' can be seen as a form of abandonment, and not only is it frowned upon, on a personal level it can prove to be a very difficult and harsh decision to make.
