Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA (September 8, 2011)

I was thrilled to be on the TLC Book Tour for Ward’s novel which is set in Mississippi just prior to and during Hurricane Katrina. This is a heartbreaking, beautifully written book which just blew me away – definitely one of my favorite reads so far this year.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Read my review.

From the Publisher:

A hurricane is building over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch’s father is growing concerned. A hard drinker, largely absent, he doesn’t show concern for much else. Esch and her three brothers are stocking food, but there isn’t much to save. Lately, Esch can’t keep down what food she gets; she’s fourteen and pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pitbull’s new litter, dying one by one in the dirt. Meanwhile, brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child’s play and short on parenting.

As the twelve days that make up the novel’s framework yield to their dramatic conclusion, this unforgettable family-motherless children sacrificing for one another as they can, protecting and nurturing where love is scarce-pulls itself up to face another day. A big-hearted novel about familial love and community against all odds, and a wrenching look at the lonesome, brutal, and restrictive realities of rural poverty, Salvage the Bones is muscled with poetry, revelatory, and real.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jesmyn Ward is a former Stegner fellow at Stanford and Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi. Her novels, Where the Line Bleeds and Salvage the Bones, are both set on the Mississippi coast where she grew up. Bloomsbury will publish her memoir about an epidemic of deaths of young black men in her community. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Alabama.

I Curse the River of Time by Per Petterson
Trade Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: Picador USA (August 2, 2011)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Read my review.

It’s 1989 and “three monumental events twine around one another in Arvid Jansen’s penumbral soul. His fifteen-year marriage is dissolving, his mother is dying of cancer, and the Berlin Wall is tumbling down. The parallels are obviousworlds are ending, internally and externallybut the analogies Petterson draws among these dramatic endings are not….I Curse the River of Time is a little like the starker reaches of the West, a little like the stonier shores of Maine, a little like Edward Hopper, a little like Raymond Carver….There is a quality that I can only call charm, or something like charm, to Petterson’s essentially dark and lonely sensibility….It exerts a gravitational pull on the reader” (Stacey D’Erasmo, The New York Times Book Review).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Per Petterson won the won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for his novel Out Stealing Horses, which has been translated into more than thirty languages and was named a Best Book of 2007 by the New York Times, TIME, Entertainment Weekly, and many other publications. He lives in Norway.

  1. Great books on offer, again! Please note that I had to fill out a state, I chose AL but that’s not actually in the Netherlands. The survey didn’t want to continue without an american state filled out. 🙂

Thanks very much for another great giveaway.

Awesome books! Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

  2. I chose AL as well because I needed to fill in that field. My actual state is Melaka (yeah, the same name as the city). Thanks for the giveaway. 🙂

Judith and Evangeline – My apologies – I set up the surveys last night when I was tired and didn’t even think of that!! LOL! I’ve fixed the survey now so it won’t impact other entries 🙂 Thanks for letting me know.

What great books. I wonder how Salvage the Bones will compare to the book I read by Tom Piazza on New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina, City of Refuge. That book deeply affected me…
