Sunday Salon – June 17, 2012

June 17, 2012

Good morning and welcome to The Sunday Salon (find more links to posts by visiting the Facebook page). Summer has definitely arrived here in Northern California with temperatures sizzling into triple digits this week. We’re supposed to get a little break in the weather after today, but I think it is safe to say that the heat is pretty much here to stay.

Half of June is gone and I have barely read one book! I could blame work (we’re short staffed and I’m working way more than normal), or my quilting obsession (I recently finished a quilt for author Beth Kephart and another one for myself), or the fact that my husband and I have been working hard on our backyard…but I think the simple truth is that my reading has just really slowed down. I can’t seem to concentrate on it for long periods of time and I feel distracted by other things in my life. I’m just going with it for now since there does not seem to be anything I can do about it.

So this morning I finished reading The Memory of Love by Aminata Forna (which is being discussed as part of the Chunky Book Club this month – hope you’ll join us or at least add your review to Mr. Linky if you’ve read it). Forna writes beautifully, but the book was not exactly what I had expected. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy it – I did! I need a day to formulate my thoughts for a review – so you can expect a review by tomorrow.

My next book will have to be With My Body by Nikki Gemell which is being discussed this Tuesday as part of BOOK CLUB on Jen’s blog. The book is described as “a thought-provoking exploration of family, sex, marriage, and love – the love we give, withhold, and surrender to.” Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

Hopefully, I can read at least a few more books before this month peters out!

I hope you are having a great weekend and I wish for you a terrific week to come. I hope whatever you are doing, it involves at least one great book!

Please follow and like the blue thistle

What a strange coincidence — I’m also reading much more slowly right now, and like you, I chose to write about it for this week’s Sunday Salon! The truth is I’ve been at a slower pace all year but June has really ground to a halt. Sigh.

  1. Sounds like you’re enjoying your summer even without reading a lot. I have a tendency to binge on books when we’re on break from homeschooling – but that will slow down starting next week, as I’ve got some big house-cleaning projects to get to. I’m going to enlist the kids to help – can’t let them enjoy their summer break TOO much, right?

    Have a great day, Wendy!

  2. I had one book that I picked up and read in bits and pieces for 2-3 weeks…but now it’s done. And I finished the ones on my list for this past week, so it feels like a fresh start now.

But sometimes I just want to do anything but read!

    Here’s MY SUNDAY SALON POST

I could have very easily passed ‘The Memory of Love’ by. It’s got the sort of title that makes a man cringe, and I almost felt embarrassed to be seen with it in public. However, it is now firmly entrenched as one of my favorite novels of all time.

  3. oh, triple digits.

    oh.

my father was here yesterday, Wendy. I showed him the quilt, displayed in my office. he was amazed.

    I remain amazed and grateful.

  4. I don’t think you need to make excuses about your reading. We all have lives outside of books and sometimes it takes precedence. Your quilts are gorgeous and I know Beth K will truly treasure the one you made for her.

My reading slowed too- maybe all this heat has something to do with it too? Our brains may just not be working so well at such high temps!

I think that “With my Body” sounds super interesting and will add it to my tbr!

  5. I just wrote (a very little bit, as to not give much away) about WITH MY BODY in this week’s Sunday Salon. It is absolutely one of the most provocative books I’ve ever read. I’ll be interested to see what you think about it.

  6. Triple digits??? I would not be able to function! Hope that you get a bit of a break from the heat and that you find a groove that works this summer!!

I’m reading slowly too but enjoying Alice Munro short stories. Meanwhile the US Open Golf is looking good in Northern Cal. Have a good week … I love gardening!

  7. Summer? We’re getting glimpses of it here but mostly rain. Enjoy the sun while you have it! I’ll look out for your thoughts on The Memory of Love as it’s been on my TBR for ages.

Hope you had a great weekend, and Kip had a great father’s day with the fur children! 🙂

  8. I’ll be curious to see your review of With My Body. I keep seeing it pop up but I’m not sure if I want to give it a go yet.
