June 17, 2012
Good morning and welcome to The Sunday Salon (find more links to posts by visiting the Facebook page). Summer has definitely arrived here in Northern California with temperatures sizzling into triple digits this week. We’re supposed to get a little break in the weather after today, but I think it is safe to say that the heat is pretty much here to stay.
Half of June is gone and I have barely read one book! I could blame work (we’re short staffed and I’m working way more than normal), or my quilting obsession (I recently finished a quilt for author Beth Kephart and another one for myself), or the fact that my husband and I have been working hard on our backyard…but I think the simple truth is that my reading has just really slowed down. I can’t seem to concentrate on it for long periods of time and I feel distracted by other things in my life. I’m just going with it for now since there does not seem to be anything I can do about it.
So this morning I finished reading The Memory of Love by Aminata Forna (which is being discussed as part of the Chunky Book Club this month – hope you’ll join us or at least add your review to Mr. Linky if you’ve read it). Forna writes beautifully, but the book was not exactly what I had expected. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy it – I did! I need a day to formulate my thoughts for a review – so you can expect a review by tomorrow.
My next book will have to be With My Body by Nikki Gemell which is being discussed this Tuesday as part of BOOK CLUB on Jen’s blog. The book is described as “a thought-provoking exploration of family, sex, marriage, and love – the love we give, withhold, and surrender to.” Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
Hopefully, I can read at least a few more books before this month peters out!
I hope you are having a great weekend and I wish for you a terrific week to come. I hope whatever you are doing, it involves at least one great book!
