Khaled Hosseini is one of my favorite authors and I am SO excited that his new novel, And The Mountains Echoed, will be released this May through Riverhead Books (go to this page to learn more about the book). Hosseini’s second novel – A Thousand Splendid Suns – blew me away when I read it in 2007 (read my review). The sign of a great book, in my opinion, is how vivid it is to me years later. I still remember the characters, heartbreak and emotion from this book six years after the fact. A Thousand Splendid Suns is most definitely a modern classic.

Riverhead Books wants to remind readers just how talented Khaled Hosseini is as we wait (impatiently!) for his next book to be released. And so, it is with great joy that I am able to offer a paperback edition of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS to one lucky U.S. reader.

From the publisher:

A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

“Spectacular. . . . Hosseini’s writing makes our hearts ache, our stomachs clench and our emotions reel. . . . Hosseini mixes the experiences of these women with imagined scenarios to create a fascinating microcosm of Afghan family life. He shows us the interior lives of the anonymous women living beneath identity-diminishing burqas.”“Hosseini writes in gorgeous and stirring language of the natural beauty and colorful cultural heritage of his native Afghanistan. . . . Hosseini tells this saddest of stories in achingly beautiful prose through stunningly heroic characters whose spirits somehow grasp the dimmest rays of hope.”—USA Today

  1. I read his first book and have meant to read this one since it came out. Somehow, I haven’t gotten to it. I want to see how he presents the women’s perspective, since the first novel focused on the men.

I loved this book beyond words. I read Khalid Hosseini’s first book when I was in 9th grade, its been about 4 years since then and I just read his second novel. This book had me in tears. It was truly very powerful; I felt this deep connection with the female characters especially Laila. I can’t even begin to fathom what I would have done had I been in her shoes. Definitely a favorite that I would love to have on my bookshelf.

I liked the facebook page, thanks for letting me know about that! 🙂

I am so interested and excited for Khaled’s next book And the Mountains Echoed. The book sounds wonderful, but I have not read any of his previous works. I would love to get my hands on a copy of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns first of all because I have heard so many good things about them.
