The Stockholm Octavo – US Giveaway

The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann
ISBN: 9780062218506
Publisher: Ecco (August 6, 2013)
432 pages

Thanks to the generosity of the publisher, I am very happy to be able to offer a giveaway of THE STOCKHOLM OCTAVO by Karen Engelmann to one lucky US reader. I read this book in hardcover in January of this year and really loved it (read my review). Set in Stockholm in 1791, the novel is full of political intrigue, romance, betrayal, murder, magic and the snap of a lady’s fan. Look at what reviewers are saying about the book:

Who knew 18th-century Sweden could be so much fun?  Karen Engelmann’s debut novel, The Stockholm Octavo (Ecco), is a juicy page-turner about the last years of King Gustav III’s reign.   .  . ..a fanciful puzzle of a plot . . . Englemann’s intellectually playful take on the mathematics of love and power proves irresistible. ―O, the Oprah Magazine

Sweden’s golden age is spiritedly captured in this finely wrought historical fiction as card-player and customs bureaucrat Emil Larsson, a bachelor whose professional ambitions are urgently dependent on his finding a wife, is caught up in the intrigue. Mrs Sparrow lays a personal Octavo for Emil, in which the eight cards drawn represent eight individuals who can help him achieve his goal – and also determine the future of a Sweden in deep crisis. This is a swirling, swooping fanfare of a tale, with an immense cast and an exhilaratingly sustained finale. —The Guardian

Elegant and multifaceted, Engelmann’s debut explores love and connection in late-18th-century Sweden and delivers an unusual, richly-imagined read. . ..  The setup is wonderfully engrossing;   . . this is stylish work by an author of real promise. ―Kirkus Reviews

As delicious as dark chocolate, The Stockholm Octavo is the essence of witty intelligence. Readers will delight in staying up half the night enchanted by every element in this Swedish weave, from the brutal winter weather to the unfurling of a lady’s fan. The plot is an urgent one, and the characters mysterious, appealing, and memorable. Not only a romp, the wisdom of The Stockholm Octavo engages the reader’s attention and inspires the desire for personal growth and connection with our fellow travelers. I felt a real kinship with author Karen Engelmann. — Sena Jeter Naslund, New York Times bestselling author of Ahab’s Wife and Abundance: A Novel of Maire Antoinette

A delicious page-turner that brings 18th century Stockholm to vivid life, complete with scandal, conspiracy, mystery, and a hint of magic. Karen Engelmann’s spectacular debut drew me in with its fascinating characters, who share their secrets of cartomancy, apothecaries, and the power of a well-fluttered fan. A captivating tale, beautifully told. — Eleanor Brown, New York Times bestselling author of The Weird Sisters

Description from the Publisher:

Life is close to perfect for Emil Larsson, a self-satisfied bureaucrat in the Office of Excise and Customs in Stockholm of 1791. He is a true man of The Town–drinker, card player, and contented bachelor. Until one evening, when Mrs. Sophia Sparrow, proprietor of an exclusive gaming parlor and fortune teller, shares with him a vision she has had–a golden path that will lead to love and connection for Emil. She offers to lay an Octavo for him, a spread of eight cards that augur the eight individuals who can help him realize this vision–if he can find them.

Emil begins his search, intrigued by the puzzle of his Octavo and the good fortune Mrs. Sparrow’s vision portends. But when Mrs. Sparrow wins a mysterious folding fan in a card game, the Octavo’s deeper powers are revealed. No longer just a game of the heart, collecting his Eight is now crucial to pulling his country back from the crumbling precipice of rebellion and chaos.

Set against the luminous backdrop of late 18th century Stockholm, as the winds of revolution rage through the great capitals of Europe, The Stockholm Octavo brings together a collection of characters both fictional and historical whose lives tangle in political conspiracy, love, and magic in a breathtaking debut that will leave you spellbound.
