P2 Modern Quilt-A-Long: Week 2 – Center Block

This week is week two of the P2 Modern Solids Quilt Along and we are tasked with stitching the center block of our quilts. Ryan and Charlie wrote:

I personally find great inspiration for my projects by looking to the past. I love seeing vintage quilt designs being re-created into “modern” quilts. What’s old is new again, as they say! Remember last week when I said we’re coming up with a way for each of you to make your quilts uniquely you own? Well, now’s the time! This week I’m asking all of you to look around and get inspired to make a block of your own design/choosing. Consider it a personal challenge from Charlie and I to exercise your creativity and grow as a quilter. The blocks we make this week will be featured in the center of each of your quilts!

Kip and I are lucky to own four, wonderful vintage quilts hand stitched and quilted by Kip’s Grandmother. I pulled them out last night and pondered what I might “borrow” from them. One of my favorites is a green and red quilt which I call “The Christmas Quilt.” I started snapping photos of it and was immediately inspired by what I saw through the lens:

Grandma’s beautiful quilt has a pretty border with cornerstones. The blocks are flowers made from half square triangles (they use pieced and appliqued design). But in this photo (please click on the photo to enjoy a larger view), what jumped out at me was that the half square triangles caught in the photo looked like pinwheels. I decided to incorporate the border motif (with cornerstones) and the idea of pinwheels into my modern block…and here it is:

This will be the center block in my quilt – finished it will be a 12″ block (the center pinwheel is 6 inches finished). Stay tuned for next week’s progress!

If you would like to see what other participants did for their center block, visit the Flickr group. It is not too late to join the quilt-a-long. For more information, visit the intro post which gives you all the info you need to join in the fun!

P2 Squared Modern Quilt-A-Long

Ryan Walsh and Charlie Scott of Patchwork Squared are hosting the debut of their design company’s first modern quilt along. This is a 7 week FREE on line class where participants will learn how to construct 9 modern quilt blocks using only solid fabrics. The quilt along will begin Monday, March 28, 2011 (you can join at any time).  When finished, participants will have assembled a 44” x 44” quilt. Fabrics used in the patterns will be from the Kona Cotton line by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Fabric kits will be available for purchase through the Fat Quarter Shop (with a special coupon good for 20% off  the purchase available for the duration of the quilt along – enter the code “kona20” at checkout to receive your discount). Grab a kit in either Mango Azure, Cardinal Banana or Glacier Cactus – enough fabric for the top, backing and binding. I’m making the Mango Azure which you can see at the top of this post (you can also assemble your own custom kit – check out this post for the yardage needed for the quilt along).

Here is the breakdown of the quilt-a-long by week (I’ve given you a link to the week #1 post):
