Wow I am amazed and jealous- did you really see a cougar? They are so beautiful! (is that your photo?) Once when I was about thirteen and we were camping, my father saw one on a hiking trail- but he didn't tell us until later because he didn't want anyone frightened. I would have loved to see the big cat.

I can't imagine having a family member just disappear. How would you ever get over something like that? The book sounds very interesting.

Glad to see you enjoyed this book as much as I did. I also loved her book Bread Alone. BTW, I checked your link to San Miguel Island and just wanted to let you know that in Hendrick's book, San Miguel is an island in the San Juan Islands in the area between Washington state and Vancouver Island, Canada. In fact it reminded me a lot of San Juan Island itself and the town of Friday Harbor. It even mentions getting on the ferry at Anacortes. I am very familiar with the San Juans, going there about once a year and being able to see them from the beach a mile from where I live. I think this is one reason the book was so appealing to me as I could see her there.

That Dunant book sounds interesting, I love stories with nuns in them. And I'd love to read some good Korean lit. I'll watch for your reviews.

Great article. I lived in the foothills of the Rockies in this country when I was young. Sitings are rare here too and the scare stories that get spread around are just so much baloney. People today don't understand animal behaviour and cling to old ideas that all wild animals are aggressive and want to attack humans. Nothing could be further from the truth. Glad to see someone set the record straight.

I have four sister and I cannot imagine what it would be like to have one go missing. That and the fact that you think this book is "GREAT" is why I'd like to read it. Thank you for entering me.

I've read some great reviews of this book. It sounds heartbreaking yet interesting. I agree with some of the above comments - books often focus on the impact a tragedy like this has on the parents and their relationship but often the siblings are left out. I also love the cover.
