Hi! This is a beautiful little memoir. I hope to read the long, unexpurgated version one day, in book form, held in my grubby little hands (which I will wash for the occasion), with one of my temporary furbabies close by.

We "met" via LibraryThing, where you kindly commented on a comment I posted. My actual name is Maggie, and I live in the SF Bay Area. I'm not married, never have been and since I'm kind of old, there will be no babies.

I'm also kind of poor (in a lower middle class American sort of way, i.e. I have a small apartment all to myself, and when I turn the tap, fresh cold water comes out, and look! I has the internets) and have no animal companions of my own. (I had to qualify the "poor" part, having just finished "Everything Is Broken", about Burma, which you reviewed.)

So I glom onto OPAs (Other People's Animals). I house-sit a lot, almost always in order to care for the animals, and I walk an assortment of dogs. Very shortly I will be headed out to do just that. First up are two rescue dogs who live happily together but despise all other dogs, so I have to hold on tight. I keep telling them that I will not be able to walk them if they pull my arms off, but it's an impulse control thing.

Next are another pair of dogs. One is a happy-go-lucky but not super well-trained Golden; the other is a small black rescue dog with major fear aggression. But she likes me now. Yay! Having a troubled dog like you feels so good.

I am already combing through your LT library, and I am trying to push myself into writing more reviews than I have up till now. If your dog events ever bring you to SF (just north, across the bridge), I would be happy to buy you a refreshing beverage of your choice.

We have an excellent independent bookstore in the area (Book Passage), and this Friday evening Mary Roach will read from her latest, "Packing For Mars". It's free! Even though I am almost exclusively a library rat.

Ilona: Thank you so much for your kind words. The animals in my life have added so much to it...I think people who love animals all feel this way.

Well written. You've expressed wonderfully what so many of us with a long lineage of fur children have ourselves experienced. I very much like the idea of a brief history of all our companions throughout our lives. They flow into our lives, share life with us, and depart. And we repeat the cycle for the many joys it brings our life and theirs.

Sheri: THANK YOU! Clint was a great cat - he had so much personality :) And I agree - Caribou's greatest contribution to my life was introducing me to my wonderful husband!
